Your garbage disposal plays a unique role in your home. It takes solid waste that falls into your pipes and turns it into something your plumbing can handle. As an electrical device, it also depends upon proper wiring and hookup to ensure it runs at the right level. At Charlotte Plumbing, our experienced plumbers know the importance of a working plumbing system, and are your source for garbage disposal repair, installation or replacement. If you’re experiencing problems with your garbage disposal, count on us to fix them.
In many households a garbage disposal is an important appliance that virtually everyone in the family takes advantage of at some point. They are very helpful in ensuring larger food or debris is able to pass through your pipes with ease. While the typical lifespan of a properly maintained garbage disposal is around 15 years, that does not mean it will be problem-free in the meantime. It’s important to catch the signs of an issue early on so a plumber can make the necessary repairs prior to a more serious problem showing up. Some of the most common signs your disposal needs a repair or replacement include:
Strange or unusual noises coming from the disposal during use
A bad odor that won’t go away
The disposal won’t turn on
Leaking water from your disposal
Frequent resetting of the unit
Replacing your old, inefficient garbage disposal can significantly enhance your kitchen's functionality and improve your plumbing system's health. Here are some key benefits of upgrading to a new garbage disposal:
Improved Efficiency: Newer models grind food waste more finely, reducing the risk of clogs and plumbing issues.
Quieter Operation: Modern garbage disposals are designed to operate more quietly, making your kitchen a more pleasant place to be.
Energy Savings: Upgrading to a new disposal can increase energy efficiency, helping you save on utility bills.
Reduced Maintenance: New units are less prone to frequent breakdowns, reducing the need for constant repairs.
Enhanced Kitchen Hygiene: Efficient waste grinding helps minimize odors and keeps your kitchen cleaner.

Cleaning your garbage disposal regularly is important to help it work properly and reduce odors. It is recommended to clean it at least once a month by running cold water, adding dish soap and grinding up some ice cubes in the unit. You can also use baking soda and vinegar to help scrub the inside of the disposal. Be sure to also clean the exterior of your unit with a mild cleaner every few weeks as well.
First and foremost, NEVER put your hand or any part of your body into the sink with a garbage disposal. If your disposal gets jammed up, you can try using an Allen wrench or pliers to unjam it. Start by turning off the power to the unit, then insert the Allen wrench or pliers into the center of the disposal and try to turn it back and forth to free up any stuck food particles. If this doesn’t work, you may need to take the motor out and inspect it for any damage. If the motor is damaged, you may need to replace it. NEVER put your hand or any
There are certain items that should never be put down a garbage disposal, such as egg shells, fibrous food like corn husks, stringy vegetables like celery, bones, coffee grounds, grease, and fruit pits. Fats, oils and greases can also damage the blades and cause clogs. As a general rule of thumb, you should avoid putting any hard or fibrous foods down your disposal.
If your garbage disposal is making loud noises, grinding slowly, or not grinding at all, it may be time to replace it. You should also check for any signs of corrosion or rust on the blades and motor as this could indicate that the unit needs to be replaced. If you're unsure about whether your garbage disposal needs replacing, you can consult a professional plumber for an inspection.
